Types we buy

Every transformer on an industrial site.

If it stepped voltage up or down inside a plant, a substation, or a commercial building, it is on our list. The table is the short version — if yours is not on it, ask anyway.

Transformer buying specification
Pad-mountLoop feed and radial feed, live front and dead front, 75 kVA through 5000 kVA.
SubstationPrimary substation and secondary unit substation transformers, with or without throat and switchgear sections.
Dry-typeVentilated, VPI, encapsulated and cast coil. General purpose through medium voltage.
Oil-filledMineral oil and less-flammable fluids. We test, drain and document.
SpecialtyRectifier, furnace, drive isolation, K-rated, grounding, auto-transformers and reactors.
Utility surplusPole-mount and single-phase overhead units in quantity.
ManufacturersAll of them — ABB, GE, Square D, Cutler-Hammer, Eaton, Siemens, Federal Pacific, Howard, Cooper, Niagara, Olsun, Rex, Virginia, and the rest.

Condition

Working, failed, or scrap — we still write a check.

The most expensive mistake we see is a plant scrapping a failed transformer for metal weight. Core and coil, copper windings and grain-oriented steel carry real value, and plenty of failed units are worth repairing.

We actively buy units that are

  • In service today — being replaced during an upgrade or capacity change.
  • Sitting idle — spares from a line that no longer runs, or a project that never happened.
  • Failed or faulted — blown bushings, shorted windings, tripped and never returned to service.
  • Leaking oil — we contain, drain and document it as part of removal.
  • Weathered or rusted — cosmetics do not change what is inside the tank.
  • Unmarked — no nameplate left. We can rate it from drawings or a site visit.

What to send us

A phone photo is enough. If you can get these, the offer comes back fast and firm.

Nameplate photoStraight on, close enough to read kVA and voltages.
Two wide shotsSo we can see access, obstructions and how it comes out.
LocationCity and state is enough to price the freight.
AvailabilityWhen it comes out of service, or when we can get on site.
QuantityIf it is more than one, a list beats a photo.

Oil, fluid and compliance

The part nobody wants to own.

Insulating fluid is the reason a lot of transformers sit on a pad for years after they stop working. It is the reason people call us instead of a scrap hauler.

  • We sample and test for PCB content before anything moves.
  • Draining, containment and spill control are handled by our crew.
  • Fluid goes to licensed disposal, and you get the manifests for your file.
  • Less-flammable fluids and askarel units are within scope — tell us up front.
  • Safety documentation and site paperwork go to your EHS team before we mobilise.

Questions we get

Straight answers.

Do you actually buy failed transformers?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. A failed unit still contains copper windings, grain-oriented silicon steel and often a repairable core and coil. We regularly pay well above scrap weight for units that other buyers walk away from. Do not call the scrap yard first.

What does it cost me to have it removed?

Nothing. Crane, rigging crew, permits, freight and disposal are built into our offer. The figure we quote is what you are paid, and it does not shrink after our truck arrives.

How do you handle the oil and possible PCBs?

We sample and test before anything is disconnected, then drain and transport under our own handling. Fluid goes to a licensed disposal facility and you receive the documentation for your environmental records.

The nameplate is gone. Can you still quote it?

Usually. Ratings from a one-line diagram, an old purchase order, or the panel schedule will get us close. Failing that, we can size it from tank dimensions, bushing configuration and a site visit.

Can you work around our shutdown window?

That is the normal case. Tell us the outage dates and we schedule rigging inside them. For plant closures we will phase removal so it does not interfere with the rest of the decommissioning.

We have twenty of them, not one.

Better. Send an equipment list and we will quote the package, including switchgear, breakers and anything else going out at the same time. Multi-unit lots usually price stronger per unit.
